There were enough Cretin and CDH alumni for a full team of men to take on the varsity. The varsity stepped up to the challenge and won the team race 26 to 37. There were three sets of brothers (Docherties, Leydens, and Zastrows), and two set of sisters (Hulls, and Modls) in this year's race. Antonia Leyden won the women's race, followed by Molly Noel (alumnae and assistant coach), and Jenna (Madden) St. Fluer rounded out the Alumnae team in third place. Danny Docherty won the men's race followed by his brother, junior Kevin Docherty and fellow alumnus Tom Mountain in third. The returning varsity team looked strong in their first trial after the long summer. There are many first year runners on this year's team. They all did a nice job of running through the challenges of the course. women's results here and the men's results here

Race Schedule: 9:30 AM Boys' JV, 9:50 AM 9th grade and under boys, 10:10 AM Girls' JV, 10:30 AM Girls' Varsity, 10:50 AM Boys' Varsity Distances: Boys: 3200m, Girls: 2400m Teams: Academy of Holy Angels, Benilde-St. Margaret's, Blake, Concordia Academy, Cretin-Derham Hall, DeLaSalle, Hill-Murray, Providence Academy, Richfield, St. Anthony Village Entries: Seven runners in each of the varsity races. Unlimited runners in the JV races. Course Maps: here Comments: A beautiful morning for a meet and we took advantage of it. For many of us this was our first official high school cross country race. The distances were shorter than the standard 4 and 5 K but were a good test of our fitness from the summer months. The majority of those who raced this course last year had improved their time, which shows good promise as we move forward.
Highland Park Dual, Tuesday, August 30, 2011, Battle Creek Park (Ski Area) - Results: Boys | Girls - Photos
Bus: Leaving at 2:45 PM from the Albert Street doors. Race Schedule: 3:45 PM Girls, 4:10 PM Boys (races may start later depending on when teams arrive) Distances: Boys: 4K, Girls: 4K Teams: Cretin-Derham Hall , Highland Park Entries: All boys in one race. All girls in one race. Comments:A little drizzle, perfect race temperature, and a challenging course against a neighborhood team for a traveling trophy. Kevin Docherty(11) lead the way for the Raiders finishing the 4K course in 13:35 to win the race. Dominic Leyden (12) was the second Raider to cross the line in 14:37 placing third. The remainder of the scoring pack was not far behind lead by Charlie Dorn (12), Dan Zastrow (11), Jake Krukowski (11), and Jay DeFor (11). Together the varsity 5 scored 22 points to put the Raider boys ahead of the Highland Scott boys by 13 points. On the girls side Laura Modl (12) finished first for the Raiders and second over all in a time of 18:29. Rachel Oberst (10) was the second Raider in at 19:28 placing fourth. Rounding out the top five for the Raiders today were Maureen Hughes (9), Bridget Mountain (10) and Maggie Johnson (10). There were many tough individual races on the course today and we held up well. The girls placed second to the Scotts with a score of CDH 32 and HP 24. The trophy however went home with the Raiders whose combine score was 54 to the Scotts' 59. A good competition on a tough course under "excellent" conditions. From top to bottom both the boys' and the girls' teams improved their over all time on this course. Check out the comparison from this year to last year: Girls, Boys.

Comments:
Humid and overcast, but Cross Country is definitely alive and well in the state of Minnesota. Competing to day were some 494 girls, and 620 boys. Those are just the ones who were timed. Each team could enter as many as they wanted, but only received 35 timing chips. We had no problems finding someone to run with today. There were 26 boys' teams and 25 girls' teams. Our girls' team finished in the same place as last year, but scored fewer points. Our boys' team moved up 6 places and scored 202 fewer points in doing so. Kevin Docherty (11) lead the Raiders finishing fourth over all in a time of 16:36, 34 seconds faster than his time a year ago. The whole of the Raider top 5 improved their time by 5:26. First year CC runner Jay Defor (11) and ninth grader Connor Leyden rounded out the top 7. Laura Modl (12) lead the Raiders in the girls race. Of our top five girls three of them are first year CC runners; Maggie Johnson (10), Maureen Hughes (9), and Charlotte Thompson. Bridget Mountain (10) finished third for the Raiders.

The team gave great support to each other and saw a fantastic finish by Kevin Docherty (11), who out paced his opponent in the end to win the race.

Comments: A beautiful night to race. Raiders continued to build on their pack running experience behind front runners Kevin Docherty (11) and Laura Modl (12). Along with Dominic Leyden (12) these three placed in the top 20 in the varsity boys and varsity girls races. There were tough races through out the pack however with Kiah Selmer (12) leading the JV girls pack. Zach Schreier (12) lead the way for the JV boys. Over all the Raiders cut minutes off their total team times from previous races this season. Within packs at all levels we are learning to share the load and push the pace. Nice work.

Nathan Odahl (9) set the early pace for the Raiders in the Green (open) race, with a Tom Bakko (12) and and Thomas Rieth (12) making up their loose pack. Darby Quirk-Becker (11) lead her contingent of Raiders through half of the girls' Green race when the pack of Bridget Walsh (12), Celeste Bailey (12), and Kate Koch (10) caught up to her. Abby Steger (12) took the pace out for the Raiders in the Gold (team) race with Lisa Murray (12) running with her. Their team mates were never far behind. In the boys' Gold race Brady Steigauf (11) took the reigns of the Raider brigade and in doing so bested his previous 5K time by 1:58 and also broke 20 minutes for the first time. Greg Conlin (11), and Stuart Cleveland (11) - who also ran a career best time at the 5K distance by 35 seconds and continues to approach the 20 minute mark - rounded out the top three. Then the Raider boys toed the line. Kevin Docherty (11) set the tone for the day - go big or go home. He took the lead and kept it winning the race in 16:19. The boys' team finished 17th over all, 8 places better than last year. The girls' team lead by Laura Modl (12), Rachel Oberst (10), and Monique Holod (12) placed 27, improving their team place by 4 over last year. The course was firm and fast. Comments: A
blustery day as the Raiders took to the race course. As the team nears
the end of its regular season some tired legs are starting to be felt,
but the spirit keeps us rolling along. The effort given today was
consistent with that of our stronger races this season as we ran over
hilly terrain. Times were faster as well. Next week is out final regular
season meet, then ten days of training before conference and section
meets. The championship part of the season is ahead and we are gearing
up. Today's race allowed us to try some new strategies.

team trip to the "Meet Of Champions". Due to circumstances beyond our
control not all of our team was able to make it to the meet. However,
individuals who were asked to step up did so willingly and without
question. The course was soggy after a night of heavy rain which was
still lingering in the morning showers we experienced up until race
time. It was an opportunity to be in a race with to top teams in our
conference and section. Many of the teams there are ranked in the state
this year, so have even earned national recognition. For our part we
raced pretty smartly, not getting too carried away, and waiting to make
our moves later in the race. Rachel Oberst (10) stepped up to the number
one position for the varsity girls. Her finishing time of 16:48
bettered her time on this course last year by 36 seconds, as well as
giving her a new PR for the distance by 11 seconds. Kevin Docherty (11)
continues to prove that he can race with the best, waiting until the
time was right he moved through the lead pack. In the final stretch
Docherty took third place breaking 16 minutes for the first time with
his finish of 15:54, which is also a 14 second best at this distance. It
was also 48 seconds faster than he had run on this course a year ago.
Also, Hannah Clancy (12) was our number 2 JV girl finishing 2:44 seconds
faster than last year. First year runner, Kate Kemper (11) lead the
Raider JV with a time consistent with her best effort of 20:01. Bridget
Walsh (12) bettered her performance over last year by 50 seconds to
finish in 20:40. For the boys Will Zastrow (9), who has been a
consistent number 9 to 7 runner on the team, lead the Raiders' JV
finishing in 19:21. Setting A 30 second PR. Senior Thomas Rieth rounded
out the Raiders' JV top seven and in the process ran 1:59 faster than
the previous year. Next week we are off in anticipation of the Suburban
East Conference Meet.

Cool and over cast, a near perfect Fall day for a championship cross
country meet. There were some great races on the course at Falcon Ridge
Golf Course in Stacy, MN today. The Stillwater Ponies stole the show in
the boys' varsity and JV races, while East Ridge and Roseville were the
teams in the girls' varsity and JV races. The CDH Raiders toed the line
and ran some of their best races of the season. Senior Captain Laura
Modl ran her first 4K under 16 minutes and was followed closely by
Sophomore Rachel Oberst, who also ran a personal best. Almost all of the
Raiders ran faster than they had the year before on this course. The
average improvement was 57.5 seconds. The JV Girls placed 7th lead by
Maddie Johnson (12) and Kate Kemper (11). The Raider boys ran strong in
their races. Kevin Docherty (11) continues to lead the Raider charge
finishing fourth overall earning him his second Cross Country
All-Conference Award. Docherty finished 51 seconds faster than he had a
year ago when he placed 11th in the conference, and 23 seconds faster
than he had ten days ago at the Meet of Champions in Alexandria. Behind
him Dan Zastrow (11) carried the Raider torch, and for the first time
this season was the second Raider to cross the finish line. Of the eight
varsity runners who had ran last year 6 of them, including Docherty and
Zastrow improved their times from a year ago. The average improvement
over a year ago for boys who improved was 41 seconds. This includes the
varsity and JV runners. After having put on 400 miles between Memorial
Day and Labor Day this summer Stuart Cleveland (11) finished second for
the Raider boys' JV. This was also the first time that Cleveland had
broken 20 minutes in a 5K race. His time of 19:28 was 1:42 faster than
last year.

Comments: What
a difference 365 days makes. Last year it was cold, wet, and we seemed a
little mystified by it all as we stepped off the bus and our tent blew
away shortly after setting it up. This year it was slightly sunning,
cool, and we exited the bus with a plan in hand. The overall results
were really similar once the dust settled. The teams felt pretty good
about how they ran, there were year over year improvements, we were
competitive in our individual match ups, and our lead runner, Kevin
Docherty (11) - in both years - advanced to State. There were of course
some differences. This year we slipped a little in the team standings,
but we managed to better some teams we had not beaten all season, and we
improved our position against others. Across the board we raced the
race with more confidence, which helped us to run faster times on a
challenging course.

Comments: During
the late morning hours of the day the sky was clear and their was a
light breeze blowing over the open areas of the course. The girls and
boys from class AA toed the line for their final High School League
race. A race for which they qualified a week before. Kevin Docherty (11)
joined the rest of the individuals from section 4AA who qualified for
the meet in box 9 of 24. At 11:00 AM 157 boys sprung to life upon
hearing the crack of the starter's pistol. It is an easy thing to get
carried away and let the adrenaline which has been mounting in your
blood stream all morning as you sat in the staging area sizing up the
competition. The experienced, patient, and focused runner knows to hold
back, wait, and position themselves for their moment. That is what
Docherty did. Having competed at the State meet last year he had learned
these lessons. At the first mile Docherty was back in the pack, but
went through the first mile in the low 5 minute range, which is typical
for him in a 5K race. In the next mile he found his way through the pack
and in site of the lead group. By the second mile he had moved into the
top 10 to 15 runners. Still gaining momentum as he moved through the
wooded part of the last mile, up the longest hill on the course with
about a half mile to go he found himself to be racing within himself. He
pushed down the last hill and passed runners who qualified ahead of him
a week prior. He looked strong as he crossed the starting flat for the
final time and headed for the short but steep hill before the finish
line. There were fewer runners in front of him than behind by far, and
even less ground to try and catch all of them. But he did try. He looked
stronger than he has at the end of any race to date. He was confident
as he moved into and held sixth place. A race artfully crafted.
