How do I get involved?

What will auditions be like?

What are the time commitments for theater? Can I play a sport or have a job and be involved in theater?

Who can audition for plays?

What about Improv?

Auditions
Typically auditions will require you to:
Read from the script/play  The script is usually available in the media center one week prior to auditions and it is a great idea to know the play before you audition for it.

Movement -  The director needs to know that you can both read and move.  Movement can be judged through a simple improvisation or a series of physical work to see how comfortable you are on the stage.

*Musical auditions will require you to both sing and dance, but the other two shows typically do not require a dance routine or a rehearsed song.

Musicals
Singing –Find out what songs are available for the audition. Choose 16 measures of a song that you can sing/sell well.  You must have the sheet music
Dancing- you will learn a routine and then the choreographer will watch you dance. You will be doing this in groups of 10.

TIME COMMITMENTS
ACTOR AND CREW HEAD:
Rehearsals for all shows will depend on the director who will know your rehearsal schedule when you come to audition.   It is possible to have a smaller part and still be involved with another activity, but typically if you are cast in the production, you are required to be at daily rehearsals.
It works very well to choose your sport seasons and work them around the theater season.  For example, do swimming in the fall and then get involved with the children’s show when swimming is over.

BUILDING SETS:  These hours are so flexible and you can come whenever you can!

WORKING ON A CREW i.e.:  lights, costumes, etc.:  Crew loves any help that they can get, so come whenever you have free time.

IMPROV:  You need to come to every “professionally coached” practice in order for you to be in the show.  Improv is another activity where you can choose your sport seasons and work them around the improv season.

Improv
CDH is one of the few schools in the metro that has an improvisational troupe coached by professional improvisational actors.  Improvisation is theater without a script. (Whose line is it anyway?)
