OverviewMusic Appreciation at Cretin-Derham Hall is the study of
music and its place in society and culture. This course will introduce
you to the fundamentals of music, composers, forms and musical styles
through study of historical periods and major works. You will learn to
discriminate and form intelligent opinions about the music you explore
both in class and outside of class. And you will lean how music
intertwines with other aspects of the culture and historical moments of
which it is a part. ExpectationsRespect - This class deals with many topics that can be very subjective, student’s opinions of various styles of music for example, and will involve a large amount of group activity and discussion. Because of this it is crucial that everyone in the class remain respectful at all times. Students are also expected to keep an open mind about the pieces and styles that will be studied. Participation - Most of the time in class will be spent in group discussion and activities. All students are expected to be prepared for class and to participate fully in all discussions and activities. ResourcesQuizzes - click below to take on-line quizzes as they are assigned. Unit 1Performance Attendance & ReviewEach student is expected to attend and write a review of one professional or two high school music performances. The performance chosen should be of a genre with which the student has limited experience. If two high school performances are chosen they should not represent the same genre. Go to this page for a list of pre-approved performances. Other performances may be used, but approval from Mr. Jacobson should be obtained before attending and reviewing the performance.
