Biology stresses the development of investigative skills using the “inquiry” approach. In covering cell biology, diversity among living things, comparative anatomy and physiology, genetics and ecology, students learn to form hypotheses, collect data and analyze results.

BIOLOGY - The Living Science Year long – 82220T1 This class will teach a wide breadth of topics and labs, with some depth and a more qualitative vs. quantitative analysis. Students will investigate the six major kingdoms of life, cells, genetics and ecology. This is a college preparatory class. Grades 10, 11
BIOLOGY - Principles and Explorations - Advanced Year long – 82240T1 This class will take the topics discussed in Biology: the Living Science and apply the use of quantitative data col- lecting techniques, along with more detailed lab procedures. Some of the topics that will be discussed include the six kingdoms of life, cells, genetics and ecology. Students are expected to be able to read for content and comprehension. Grades 10, 11
PRE-AP BIOLOGY - Honors Year long – 82250T1 This class is designed for college bound/science-oriented students and will include detailed lab work, class dis- cussion, outside reading and projects. PRE-AP Biology is different from “Biology: The Living Science” and “Biol- ogy: Principles and Explorations” in the following ways: amount of detail, outside class work and speed/depth at which topics are learned. Ninth grade students in the accelerated science program take this course. These students will be invited and tested for this class. Register for Physical Science - Honors. Grades 10, 11 (9, by invitation only)
ADVANCED PLACEMENT BIOLOGY - Honors Year long – 82260T1 This course is a second year biology course and is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biolo- gy course. After showing themselves to be quali?ed on the AP Examination, some students, as college freshmen, are permitted to undertake upper-level biology courses. This AP course is divided into three main categories: Molecules and Cells; Heredity and Evolution; and Organisms and Populations. Due to the dif?cult labs and large amount of material on the exam, summer work and extra sessions will take place throughout the school year. St. Mary’s University has approved AP Biology - Honors as part of its Program for Advanced College Credit (PACC). 11th and 12th grade students who take AP Biology - Honors and maintain a “C” average in this class may earn from St. Mary’s four college credits. These credits are transferable to approximately sixty other colleges and universities. Prerequisites: Pre-AP Biology - Honors (or instructor’s permission) AP Chemistry or Honors Chemistry - may be taken concurrently (or instructor’s permission) Grades 11, 12
NEW: ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE - Advanced Year long – 84560T1 This upper-level environmental science class will study such topics as ecology, pollution, earth’s resources, geology, populations, agriculture and organic gardening, while learning real-world techniques of reducing our negative effect on the environment. Some outside ?eld trips are required, and a weekend-long ?eld trip to an environmental learning center is strongly encouraged. Approximate cost of ?eld trip: $180.00 Prerequisite: Biology Grades 11, 12
ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE - Honors Year long – 84650T1 This year long course is designed to be the equivalent of a college environmental science course. After show- ing themselves to be quali?ed on the AP Examination, some students can receive college credit. In this course, ecological principles, population studies, geology, pollution studies, earth’s resources, environmental policy, land management issues and environmental justice are part of what is studied. Some outdoor and Saturday ?eld trips are required, as well as summer reading. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in a weekend class trip to an environmental learning center in Minnesota. Approximate cost: $180.00. Prerequisite: Chemistry with a grade of “B” or better. Grades 11, 12
HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY – Advanced or Honors Year long – 85646T1 In this year long course students will focus on the human body. Through lab work, lectures, readings and discus- sions, students will consider the structure and function of human body systems. Students will investigate the tissues, organs and organ systems of the human body - skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, ex- cretory, nervous, endocrine and reproductive. In addition to the normal functions, students will consider diseases or problems related to these systems. Honors credit is available to students who complete an additional project. This honors option must be declared officially by the tenth day of trimester 1 and the option may not be changed after this deadline. St. Mary’s University has approved Human Anatomy and Physiology as part of its Program for Advanced College Credit (PACC). 11th and 12th grade students who take Human Anatomy and Physiology and maintain a “C” aver- age in this class may earn from St.. Mary’s three college credits. These credits are transferable to approximately sixty other colleges and universities. Prerequisite: BIOLOGY-Advanced or Pre-AP BIOLOGY Grades 11, 12
HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY–U of MN College in Schools Program -Honors Year long – 85660T1 In this year long course students will examine speci?c topics in human anatomy and physiology, such as ?tness and disease and body systems such as the respiratory, muscular, and cardiovascular systems. Students engage in a wide range of learning, anatomical model building, and inquiry-based lab activities. This course will ful?ll one freshman-level college semester in anatomy and physiology. Students taking this course will be required to attend lab activities off campus. Some of these labs will occur outside the school day. This course is pending approval from the University of Minnesota College in Schools program. Prerequisite: BIOLOGY-Advanced or Pre-AP BIOLOGY Grades 11, 12 | |
